A refrigerator malfunction isn’t the kind of repair you can postpone until next week. You will have to call for emergency service if you are willing to salvage all those groceries getting spoilt by the minute. But if you take good care of your refrigerator with a simple routine check-up, you may be able to get 20 plus years of reliable service from your appliance, while keeping it clean and energy efficient.
Sure you can live with a little visually messy refrigerator, but it’s the hidden mess on the outside that shortens its lifespan. It helps keep your vegetables and dishes cold with the assistance of two different coils, an evaporator coil which absorbs the heat from inside the fridge, and a condenser coil that pushes that heat outside the fridge. When these coils get covered with dust, dirt and hair, the refrigerator’s compressor has to work more to keep the cooling process going. That extra strain can exhaust the machine, causing premature compressor failure that is often expensive to repair.
The good news, you can thoroughly clean your refrigerator’s coils in less than ten minutes. Easy coil cleaning steps:
1. The refrigerator must be kept at a distance from the wall and must be unplugged before any cleaning and / or maintenance work.
2. Look for coils, thin metal tubes that wind back and forth on the back of the fridge. Sometimes the coils are at the bottom, concealed behind a removable front or rear grate.
3. Check if the coils are coated in dust or hair, and if that’s the case, then the compressor is working too hard, which can lead to higher energy bills and premature compressor failure.
4. Use a vacuum cleaner hose attachment to remove all the dust you can reach. If some of the dust is hard to reach, use a flexible brush to clean it manually. The condenser fan at the bottom of Refrigerators usually the ones with the coil, must be cleaned too.
5. Before you move the fridge back into place, perform a final cleaning process of the floor underneath and any exterior vents or grills. If your fridge has the coils on the back, leave at least an inch of space between the coils and the wall.
